Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur was established in 1960. On June 26, 2002, the Government of India granted the institute deemed-to-be university status under the UGC Act, 1956. Earlier, the institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). VNIT Nagpur was also selected by the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD) as one of the 12 Indian institutes to represent the country in the BRICS Network University.

In the NIRF Rankings, VNIT Nagpur secured Rank 86 in the Overall category with a score of 50.14. It ranked 44th in Engineering with a score of 56.58 and 10th in Architecture and Planning with a score of 61.22.
