About Sikkim Manipal University

The Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), formerly known as the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical, and Technological Sciences, was founded on November 15, 1992, as a result of an agreement between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation to provide exemplary education and health care services in Sikkim and across the country. It is the country’s first-ever Public-Private Partnership in higher education and health care. There are two campuses at the university. The Medical and Technology campuses. The government of Sikkim provides a grant of Rs 2.25 crore per annum for the hospital, against which CRH offers free treatment to BPL families and concessional treatment to other state residents. The Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 vide the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995). The University Grants Commission recognizes SMU under Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act, 1956, vide letter No. F.9-7/96(CPP-I) dated December 9, 1998, and approved by the Government of India.

The Sikkim Manipal University courses are run by the university are approved by regulatory bodies like the Medical Council of India (MCI), Nursing Council of India, Indian Association of Physiotherapy, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), and Distance Education Council. The university offers a blend of new age and conventional courses. The new age courses are known as Job Ready Degrees. Sikkim Manipal University Job Ready Degrees are BTech and BBA. Sikkim Manipal University admissions are based on the overall merit and performance of the students in the entrance exams.

Sikkim Manipal University Application Process 2026

Sikkim Manipal University admission is both merit and entrance-based. The university offers a Paramedical diploma in seven disciplines. For admission to some courses, the university conducts separate entrance tests, and Personal Interview (PI) rounds to evaluate the candidates. In contrast, for others, the admission is purely based on the merit of the candidates. SMU also offers courses through its distance learning.

The primary library at SMU, Gangtok is magnificent. It has an excellent collection of 58816 books, 18997 titles, and 2500 periodicals, as well as the following services: leading service, reference service, database searching, digital library, book bank service, question banks service, current awareness service, CD Rom and DVDs, reprographic service, newspaper clippings, Internet service, and Wi-Fi, Library internet service. EPAC is also available in the library.

The university features four hostels, two for boys and two for females, each with its own restroom, night canteen, lift, and other amenities. Boys and girls have their own mess and canteen, which serves vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, as well as a food court for everyone.
